Homeschool

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
II Timothy 2:15

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Joshua 1:8

It was the summer of 1993; Jeff and I had just married that May and I was with-child a month or so later.  One day while in the kitchen listening to the radio, I heard a broadcast that would change my life forever -- Dr. James Dobson was discussing homeschooling with Dr. & Mrs. Raymond Moore.

Dr. Raymond & Dorothy Moore
"The Grandparents of Homeschooling"

I had never heard of such a thing, but right there and then God was speaking to me.

Not long after that broadcast, I came upon this magazine at our local Christian bookstore...

August/September 1993 issue of The Teaching Home

YES!  This is what I wanted my family to look like!
God was confirming his calling!

I devoured the magazine from cover to cover
(and still have that magazine today)

God called us to homeschool before our first child was born and we have followed that leading ever since.  I think God called us early on knowing it would take me a while to figure it all out; but little-by-little we became more informed -- a new pastor at our church was a homeschool dad that made available homeschool information packets to purchase and a friend of my family's began homeschooling a year before us and was having such success that I just bought the same curriculum she was using.

It is hard to believe that we have been home educating for 16  years (both our daughters K-12) and are now "retired" from this beloved phase of our lives (yet in it for life, as one never stops learning).  Our girls have never been in a government institution and we pray that families will have the freedom to home educate forever.  We may not have been blessed with a quiver full like the McKim's family, but we LOVED every moment of it!!!

We named our homeschool: Prairie Bible Academy
(and our hobby farm "Prairie Hill Farm")

Our Educational Philosophy & Teaching Approach:

Biblical
We firmly believe that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom and base ALL of our learning upon Sola Scriptura (Latin, "by Scripture alone"). Therefore, we look first to see what the Scriptures, God's Holy Word, say about any and all subjects, issues, and doctrines rather than the mere philosophy of fallible man. Our entire school day, as well as our 24/7 living, is saturated in God's Word.
And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up, ~ Deuteronomy 6: 5-7
Hebraic and Providential
Our homeschool style is more of a Lifestyle of Learning – incorporating all of life in our learning process. And although we maintain high academic standards, more important than academic knowledge is the development of Godly wisdom and to walk in a manner pleasing to our LORD; therefore we use a Biblical (Hebraic) approach to education with God and His Word paramount. We teach the totality of Scripture! HIStory is taught chronologically and providentially. Science is studied in the order of the days of Creation, centered on God’s Word and God’s World. We do a lot of lapbooking, timelines, interactive notebooking, mapping, hands-on, and field trips as well as an occasional unit study or workbook.  Math varies from year to year, but it must be practical and usable.

Our School’s Verse is:   And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Deuteronomy 6: 5-7

My Key Verse is:  And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.  For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life:  and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
Deuteronomy 32:46-47

Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.  And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware.
Deuteronomy 11: 18-25
